A Scoodie and A Striped Hat make their way to Oregon!

I had a nice conversation with someone on reddit who was diagnosed with Lymphoma and has recently started treatments.
We've got a panda scoodie and a cute striped beanie on the way today!

Not only can we send to people in Kansas who need a chemo hat, we can send to anywhere in the entire world!  If you want/need a hat yourself, or you know someone going thru chemotherapy who might want/need a handmade hat...let me know and we'll get one there!

Tuesday crocheting and Netflix

I seem to always have a series going on Netflix.  Right now, I'm watching The Office...again.  What started out as just wanting to watch one Christmas episode in December has turned into All Scranton All The Time.  And I just watched the whole series last January when I had dental surgery.  It's funny every time :)

When I have a crochet project going, it's nice to hear voices in the background.  And watching a show I've watched before is ideal because I don't have to look up at the screen to watch.  Starting a new show is harder because it requires too much concentration!

This popped up on my facebook feed once and I thought it was so funny and so true!

This morning is pink and gray back post double crochet and Dwight in Florida.  Who's your favorite character from The Office?  Do you have a favorite season?  Or favorite joke?

Thought I'd share a couple of my other projects:

Penguin mittens for my niece in Nebraska for an early Valentine gift.  I got the pattern here and used black yarn rather than gray.  I wasn't sure if she would recognize them as penguins if they weren't black.

When I'm not making hats for A Hat from Howard, I make washcloths for The Pink Slipper Project.
They have a new shelter every month in need and I follow their facebook page for updates.  This is a great project for me because I'm able to help others and I use the washcloths as a chance to practice a new stitch or motif.  I truly believe this has helped me become a better crocheter.

And a tunisian crochet washcloth started.  I'm learning!

I use any cotton yarn.  I Love This Yarn Cotton is very soft and silky feeling.  It can really showcase pretty stitches.  I use Sugar and Cream, also, although it's a big more rough to the touch.  It seems more durable.
I always pledge 5 washcloths and they cost about $4-$5 to mail.

Want some patterns?

And cotton yarn will be excellent for making hats for Crochet for Cancer for the spring and summer months!

Have a great crochet day!  ~Heather

I've been working on some new hats!

Since it's been so cold outside, I've been working on a bunch of new hats!

This one was probably the hardest stitch I've ever attempted.  It's crochet cables.  So hard at first!
I thought I was doing really well and was almost finished but the right side of the cables seemed to be too straight.  So I had to frog it all back to the ribbed part and start over.  That time...I got it right and it was a lot of fun to finish!
This one is for my husband but I plan to make several now that I know I can and send them off for A Hat from Howard.

This one is from The Crochet Crowd's January 2015 challenge.

This one was hard to get the size right.  The site suggests you add an extra 2 rounds, but that made it huge!  The green hat above was with an H hook and followed the pattern exactly.  It came out a little bit tight on my head.
The hat below was with an I hook and I added 2 extra rows.  Gigantic!  I frogged it and followed the pattern exactl, but the bigger hook still made it pretty large.  I had to do a little bit of adjusting on the back to make it fit my head.  And I think I made the brim bigger than the pattern on accident, but it's still cute.  I made flowers to use instead of using buttons.
In the end, not my favorite hat to make.

And then I made a random beanie and just used colors on-hand.  I really like it!

reddit

In addition to making hats for our chapter, I also like to donate items to other people and groups.  I've found reddit to have lots of people not just posting about their hobby, but asking for assistance with their crochet causes.  I've made washcloths, coffee cozies and other small items.

I just posted to /r/crochet asking for people to donate hats to us.  I hope they do!  There are some amazing crochet photos on there and we'd be so lucky to have any of their help!!

I'll keep you posted :)

Here's to a New Year: 2015!

While it's not January 1st...it's a start!

My goal for A Hat from Howard:  A Chapter of Crochet for Cancer is to be able to donate a minimum of 200 hats to chemotherapy patients this year.  Not only do I want to be able to donate to cancer centers in Kansas, I want to be able to make private donations to individuals.

To achieve this goal I will need help!  If you knit, crochet or sew, please consider making at least 1 hat to send to us.  We ask that the hats are handmade, soft and comfortable for someone who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.  I know that a wool hat can be tempting to make as it is warm and it can get cold in Kansas...but wool can be scratchy.  We suggest that you test out your yarn by rubbing it against your wrist or under your chin.  If it feel scratchy, consider using a different yarn.

We need all shapes and sizes to be donated:  infant, child, teen, women and men sizes and styles.  A wide variety would be appreciated.  Here are a few that I made last year:

If you would like hats donated, let me know and we'll get some sent to you right away :)

Feel free to contact me with any questions.  I am more than happy to help!
